Mix Calibration

Mix calibration keeps soft-serve and frozen yoghurt serving the same way from the first cone to the last. SnoCream adjusts your machine to suit your product, local conditions and daily trade volumes.

Mix Calibration

What mix calibration covers on your machine

Mix calibration is the process of setting your machine so the product comes out with the right body, air content and serving temperature for your menu. For cafes, kiosks and restaurants this matters because a mix that is too thin can drip and lose shape, while a mix that is too tight can slow service and put strain on the machine. We calibrate the machine against the mix you are actually using, not a generic setting, so your product serves the way you expect in Durban heat, Gauteng dry winter air or coastal humidity.

The service is suitable for single-flavour, twin-flavour and combination soft-serve and frozen yoghurt units. We also check the effect of local water quality, room temperature and daily throughput because these factors change how the machine performs. If your serving size is uneven, the texture is icy, or the product is coming out too soft after lunch rush, calibration can usually sort it without replacing major parts.

  • Texture and body adjustment for smoother serving
  • Overrun setting to balance yield and mouthfeel
  • Draw temperature checks for stable output
  • Consistency checks across first serve and peak trade hours
  • Calibration matched to your specific mix ratio and machine type

How our technicians set the mix correctly

We start by checking the machine condition, the mix batch and the current serving result. Then we measure the product flow, temperature and draw rate before making the necessary adjustments. If the machine has recently had a seal change, deep clean or relocation, we include those factors as well because they affect pressure and output. Our team does not guess at settings, we test the result in real serving conditions and fine tune it until the product is consistent.

During the visit we may adjust hopper settings, freezing cylinder performance, viscosity control and feed balance where applicable. We also check for signs of poor mix preparation, such as lumps, separation or incorrect dilution. In some cases the issue is not the machine itself but a mix that has been stored in a warm storeroom, left in direct sun or prepared with the wrong water volume. That is why calibration includes practical on-site checks, not just a quick turn of a dial.

  • Initial assessment of current serving result
  • Measurement of product temperature and dispense consistency
  • Calibration adjustments made in small steps
  • Trial servings checked for texture and appearance
  • Final sign-off once the product holds shape and serves evenly

Service turnaround for Durban and nationwide calls

For most calibration jobs in Durban, Springfield Park, Umhlanga and Pietermaritzburg, we aim to schedule quickly depending on route and machine condition. For Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Gqeberha, turnaround depends on job grouping and travel planning, especially where the machine needs to be checked after a breakdown repair or seasonal restart. When a kiosk is preparing for a busy weekend or a restaurant is changing from one mix supplier to another, we try to prioritise the visit where possible.

Simple calibration work may take under an hour per machine. More involved jobs, such as a machine that has been standing idle, had repeated overrun issues or needs training for new staff, can take longer. If parts are required, we will explain that early so you can plan around trade hours. We understand load-shedding and power interruptions can affect serving temperature, so we also look at the machine's recovery after a power cycle.

  • Quick calibration for minor texture and serving issues
  • Extended on-site testing for repeat consistency problems
  • Priority scheduling for seasonal opening and peak trade periods
  • Route planning for multi-site operators
  • Support for machines affected by outages or recent relocation

Pricing approach and what affects the quote

Our pricing is based on the machine type, the number of heads or flavours, the amount of testing needed and where the site is located. A single machine in Springfield Park will cost less to service than a group of units across multiple branches in different towns. If your machine only needs a standard calibration and quick check, the cost stays straightforward. If we discover that seals, pumps or other wear items are affecting the product, we quote those separately so you know exactly what is driving the total.

We keep the quote practical and transparent because many operators need to plan around stock, wages and municipal operating costs. If you run a kiosk in a mall, at a service station or in a high-footfall restaurant, we can align the work with your quieter trading window. The aim is to fix the product without unnecessary downtime or surprise add-ons.

  • Quoted according to machine count and location
  • Separate pricing for extra parts or seal work if needed
  • Ideal for single-site and multi-site operators
  • Can be bundled with deep clean or preventive maintenance
  • Designed to reduce wasted mix and poor yield

How often calibration should be checked

Most sites should review calibration every 4 to 8 weeks, especially during hot months, school holidays and other busy periods. If your menu changes often, or you switch between different mixes, you may need a check more frequently. Coastal sites in Durban and Gqeberha often notice changes sooner because humidity can affect storage and serving behaviour, while inland sites can be affected by dry conditions and temperature swings.

We also recommend a calibration check after a site relocation, machine installation, major clean, seal replacement or any long power interruption. If staff members report that one shift is serving softer product than another, that is a sign the machine needs attention. Good calibration keeps portions steady, helps control wastage and makes sure customers get the same result every time.

  • Every 4 to 8 weeks for active trade sites
  • After relocation or fresh installation
  • After major cleaning or seal replacement
  • When switching mix supplier or recipe
  • After repeated complaints about texture or yield

What to have ready before we arrive

To save time, keep the current mix on hand and make sure the machine is in normal operating condition. If possible, have the last few days of serving notes ready, including any customer complaints, product changes or power interruptions. Clear access around the machine is also helpful so our technician can work safely and test servings properly. If your site has limited power during trading hours, tell us in advance so we can plan around it.

We support cafes, kiosks and restaurants across South Africa from our Durban base, with service available in Springfield Park, Umhlanga, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Gqeberha and Pietermaritzburg. If you need mix calibration as part of a wider maintenance plan, we can include training, deep clean service, sanitising supplies and a seasonal check in the same visit.

  • Current mix batch and recipe details
  • Machine model, head count and serving issues
  • Recent fault history or outage notes
  • Access to water, power and a clean work area
  • Any preferred serving texture or target portion size

Questions we get asked

What signs show my machine needs mix calibration?

Uneven serving, icy texture, product that collapses too quickly, or a mix that runs too soft are common signs. If portions vary between shifts, calibration is usually due.

Can you calibrate after a new mix supplier is introduced?

Yes. New mixes often behave differently, so we adjust the machine to suit the new recipe and serving target.

Do you offer calibration for more than one branch?

Yes. We can plan calibration for single sites or route calls for multiple branches in different towns.
